Dimebag Darrel Killed Three Years Ago Today
Dec 8th, 2007 by Guitar MX Admin
| It was three years ago today on December 8, 2004, that ‘Dimebag’ Darrell Abbot, lead guitarist for Pantera and Damageplan, was shot and killed while performing with Damageplan at a club in Columbus, Ohio. He was killed by a deranged fan, who took three other lives that night, before he was killed by a police bullet. Dimebag’s death was shocking, and was a huge loss for fans of Heavy Metal guitar and is still missed today, as Dimebag was one of metal’s greatest guitar players. |

Dimebag was influenced by guitarists Ace Frehley, Tony Iommi and Eddie Van Halen. As a teenager, he had won so many guitar competitions in Texas, that he was eventually banned from participating. He and his brother Vinnie Paul formed Pantera in 1981. They had huge success during the 90’s with albums like ‘Cowboys From Hell’, ‘Vulgar Display of Power’ and ‘Far Beyond Driven’, which are filled with amazing riffs and solos by Dimebag, who’s playing is easily recognized by his use of high-pitched squeals.
Here’s a solo performance from the Dimevision DVD:
Not only was Dimebag a great guitar player, but by all accounts, he was a great person too, who loved to have fun and was loyal to his friends and fans. Here are a few videos that show why Dimebag is so missed today.

Dimebag was a riffin’ fool. He could riff like no other. He was the riffenist. A true riffer that can never be replaced. I liked his little riffs. He was the original riffmaster. He invented riff and roll. He like kittens. Peace out!!!!!
