| With CD sales in a multi-year decline, this has been described as a dark time for the music industry. However, Guitar Hero has proven to be one of the salvations of the music industry by introducing music to a whole new fan base, and these fans are buying the music. | ![]() |
Herman Li, guitarist or DragonForce told USA Today that since their song appeared on Guitar Hero III “Our CD sales have gone up, and we are high up the charts on digital downloads”. During the last week of 2007, when many gamers were getting Guitar Hero III as a Christmas gift, digital sales of ‘Through the Fire and Flames’ by DragonForce rose to 37,825 from fewer than 2,000. Cheap Trick, Kiss and The Pretenders all saw exponential increases in the digital sales of their songs that appeared in the Guitar Hero game.
It’s not just digital sales that have increased. Gamers are also buying CD’s of bands that they have been introduced to by Guitar Hero. Slipknot and Killswitch Engage have seen increased CD sales since appearing on Guitar Hero. Gamers are also showing up at shows. Since ‘Carry On Wayward Son’ appeared in Guitar Hero II, Kansas guitarist Rich Williams noticed more young people showing up at their shows. “The front row of almost every show we did was filled with young teenagers. It’s all due to that (Guitar Hero). It’s brought us a whole new fan base.”
With all the added exposure bands are getting, it’s very likely that bands will now be competing to appear on future releases of Guitar Hero. Aerosmith has fully embraced the craze. Activision will be launching ‘Guitar Hero: Aerosmith’ this summer; a Guitar Hero game fully devoted to Aerosmith songs.
