Hagar/Satriani Supergroup Claims to Rival Led Zeppelin
May 25th, 2008 by Guitar MX Admin
Former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar and guitarist Joe Satriani have formed a supergroup, along with Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony. The project is called “Chickenfoot”, and according to Hagar, it could rival Led Zeppelin.
When people hear the music, it’s Led Zeppelin. It’s as good as that. I know that’s a mighty bold statement… We could rival Zep.
A mighty bold statement indeed! These are 4 great musicians though, and if any supergroup is going to rival Led Zeppelin, having Satch on guitar is certainly a good start. Here’s why:
The band has about nine songs written, and are going into the studio in September 2008. Can’t wait to hear what they come out with. You can read more about this story here.
Wow — really fantastic playing. Love it!
But… sorry. Not as good as Zep. Not half as good. Not even a tenth as good. Not even in the same same universe as Zep.
Prediction: a year from now, Chickenfoot will be in the 99 cent bin and Zep will still be one of the best ever to take the stage.
The playing was virtuoso. I’ve never heard Satch play so well before. But sorry. This wasn’t a song. It was a showcase with a catchy melody. And that’s supposed to make these guys as good as Zep?
No way, Jose.
You’re probably right. Chances are good that it will be a flop. But they said the same thing about Led Zeppelin. I’m looking forward to hearing it.
These are excellent musicians, and this could be a heck of a band (if this is true). I’ve also noticed that each and every member of this group is a hardcore Zeppelin fan, and with good reason. Led Zeppelin consisted of not just four brilliant musicians, but four revolutionary virtuosos, and even more importantly their combined talent created a fifth element that was the magical Zeppelin chemistry. I mean come on, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, John Bonham, were the greatest line up of talent ever assembled in a rock band, and most rock musicians know it. I would like to hear the actual comment that Hagar made. My guess is that it was a little tongue in cheek, or some shrewd promotion.
They may very well rival Led Zep in pure talent… but I don’t think there’s anybody who will rival them in terms of influence or longevity. Led Zep is just too entrenched in rock & roll history for another band to displace them in that respect. There are plenty of bands that have come along that I think are ‘better’ bands talent-wise (and Satch is. IMO, a more gifted player technically then Page), but there’s more then the talent factor to consider here.
Hey…we are talking about the band aren’t we? Good job Sammy. 80 mill on tequilla and he hasn’t lost the marketing touch.
ahh no mames
ufff joe & sammy….no mamar
esto será una combinacion de poca madre, esperamos con ansias ese material…
It very well could rival Zeppelin, same level of talent, and much better guitar playing..recently saw Zeppelin Live on VH1 and it was virtually unwatchable, Page made so many mistakes, the dangers of heroin..I’ve seen every Joe tour for the past 15 yrs..have yet to see him make a mistake.
Sammy belongs right there with Zeppelin, people forget that he has been at it nearly as long as Zep. Problem is that Sammy never appealed to the Marlboro smoking/ Bud Drinking/ Pickup truck driving crowd like Zep did, so people forget about Montrose etc…
People resist change, and it while zep has written some timeless songs, they are certainly not the be all end all..
I can’t wait to hear this new project , should be incredible
Hmmmmm I remember seeing Sammy about the time of Standing Hampton and he did a version of Whole Lotta Love that just killed…..
but its always about the songwriting and if they can come up with the songs it could happen………..
maybe they should just be a killer cover band — kind of hard rock jammy band…..
You have some serious talent with “Chickenfoot”. I have always pledged my allegiance to Zepplin..lol and was a huge fan of Hagar and Van Halen….But Satriani is the Best Guitarist in the world….PERIOD….
I have seen him live and I have seen his students live…wow….
This band has the right stuff my friends and look forward to hearing their music soon. Peace
Wow! That is pretty bold Sammy!!!
Sammy is pretty much trying to create his version of Van Hagar so he can go out and play his lame Van Hagar tunes.
Adding Joe Satriani into the mix? The guy is unworkable. His managment thought he was “too good” for a Richie Blackmore replacment in Deep Purple in the mid 90s.
Now look at Joe Satriani. Chickenfoot? Come on guys. If you are supposed to be a “rival for Led Zeppelin” then come up with a name that doesn’t have us laughing when we are trying to take you serious.
I’ll take my Van Halen with David Lee Roth anyday.
LoL.David Lee Roth? Please his Bald spot sings better and writes better Lyrics. Hagar and Satch together…friggin wow is all I have to say.

I love all those guys. Sammy rocks, and Joe is incredible…I’ve seen Michael with Van Halen, Van Hagar, and with Sammy. Chad totally rocked with the Chili Peppers.
I’m old…I saw Zep back in the mnid 70’s in LA. I LOVED em them…but I have to say…I was really disappointed in Jimmy’s onstage ability…maybe ability isn’t the right word. Maybe it was just a really off night.
A year later I was watching Van Halen completely shred and Eddie was awesome live.
I think it’s gonna be good…even if it doesn’t last…look at Damn Yankees. They had some good stuff while they were around. I’d say to enjoy it why we can!
