Marty Friedman vs Paul Gilbert on Japanese TV
Nov 26th, 2007 by Guitar MX Admin
Until earlier this year, Marty Friedman (Cacophony, Megadeth) co-hosted a Japanese rock/variety show called ‘Rock Fujiyama‘. Marty’s good friend Paul Gilbert (Racer X, Mr Big) also made an appearance on the show. Both guitarists are very popular in Japan, especially Marty, who lives in Japan and is a fixture on Japanese music television. Both also speak fluent Japanese.
Here is a cool video from Paul’s appearance on the show. It features a musical contest between Marty, Paul and co-host Rolly Teranishi. In typical Japanese game show fashion, the loser of the contest has to drink something horrible. The video ends with Marty and Paul playing songs by their old bands in a segment called ‘Big-Deth’
Here are some other interesting videos of Marty and Paul on Japanese TV.
- In this video, Marty and Paul try to guess which Kiss song a woman is listening to on her headphones, and then play it on the guitar.
- In this game, A to Z, someone pulls a ball out of a box with a letter on it, and Marty or Paul play a riff from an artist that begins with that letter. Strange that Marty chooses to play Metallica before Megadeth when drawing the letter M.
- Some good old shredding between Paul and Marty.
There are lots of video clips on YouTube from Rock Fujiyama to check out, including this appearance by Kerry King.
Rock Fujiyama is no longer on the air in Japan. It ended earlier this year, but Marty still makes frequent appearances on various Japanese TV shows. You can find out more about his appearances by clicking here.

This could never happen on American TV….what does the loser drink during the “Riff-off”?
