Parody Videos on YouTube Shred Guitar Greats
Oct 19th, 2007 by Guitar MX Admin
You may have seen the parody videos on YouTube created by StSanders with names like ‘Steve Vai shreds’ and ‘Jake E. Lee shreds’. They feature performances by well known guitarists, but are overdubbed with awful guitar playing and oddly placed applause. Besides being hilarious, the videos are also very well done. The overdubbings are almost perfectly synchronized with the video, and they have even fooled a few people who thought they were actual performances.
The videos are the work of Santeri Ojala, a media artist and guitar player from Tampere, Finland, who was interviewed for a recent Wired article. Ojala got the idea for creating these videos while playing his guitar along to a Steve Vai performance on television while the sound was turned down. Since then, he has created 12 ‘shreds’ videos, spoofing artists like Slash, Metallica, Carlos Sanatana, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai and others.
My favorite is the ‘Eddie Van Halen shreds’ video.
