Software Makes Figuring Out Songs By Ear Easier
Dec 3rd, 2007 by Guitar MX Admin
The folks behind Guitar-Leads.com have recently released a software program called Song Surgeon. Song Surgeon helps musicians figure out songs by slowing down a song, and allowing every note to be heard, and how it’s played. The program slows down the song to the point that every hammer on, every pull off, every bend is easily distinguished.
| Song Surgeon can cut out a segment of any digital song, loop it, slow it down from 50% to 75%, and even change the pitch. It works with any audio file format, and can even be used as a CD ripper or file converter. You can find demo videos that show how the program works on the Song Surgeon web site. | ![]() |
You may be wondering why you would need a tool like this, when tabs to most songs can be found online. The Song Surgeon web site raises some good points about online tabs. For example, tabs are often incorrect and incomplete. Solos are rarely tabbed on free online tabs, which makes a tool like Song Surgeon very useful. It seems it would also make a great educational tool, helping to improve your ability to learn songs by ear.
You can find more information on Song Surgeon by clicking here.

This is good, for beginners since most of the time you ask yourself what are they playing there?!! You feel it but you can not put the finger on it. Slowing down a bit may help you very much.
So what differentiates this from the half-dozen other similar programs?
Honestly, probably nothing…but I’m not familiar with the other programs.
