The Top 25 Greatest Guitar Riffs Of All Time
Apr 2nd, 2008 by Guitar MX Admin
A recent poll was taken among students from London music schools. They were asked to choose the greatest guitar riffs of all time.
They came up with a list of mostly classic rock riffs. Of the top 25, only 7 were written in the last 20 years and there wasn’t a single riff written since 2003.
Does this mean that all the good riffs have been written, or does nostalgia play a role?
It’s possible that you have to wait until the dust settles before we can truly consider a riff’s eligibility for classic status - John Wheatcroft, Guitar-X Music School
I would agree with that. Here’s the list the students came up with. All in all, not a bad list. The links go to videos of each riff being performed.

I agree with most of them. I love Maiden but honestly at this moment I don’t remember the riff in Run to the hills…I think that One from Metallica should be there too, and actually more songs of Metallica because they created great starting riffs, they kind of patented dark clean tone starting riffs
