Update to Guitar Instructors Copyright Dispute
Jul 11th, 2007 by Guitar MX Admin
The story about YouTube yanking David Taub’s video guitar lessons because of a copyright dispute, which we reported on this blog on July 7, has become quite a hot story, and causing a lot controversy regarding music copyright issues. We’re happy to report that there has been a positive development in this story. In their forum, NextLevelGuitar.com web developer and video producer Tim Gilberg posted that they are working on a “new format for video song lessons”. A recent article in the San Diego Union-Tribune provides a clue:
Since Taub and his business partner, Tim Gilberg of Carlsbad, were yanked from YouTube on June 29, they’ve started establishing new videos for the site that offer lessons with no official references to songs. For instance, instead of demonstrating a few riffs from the Eagles’ “Hotel California,” Taub would simply play a similar-sounding riff.
So it’s very possible that we will soon see David teaching songs again on YouTube; watch for it. After all, The RIAA can’t claim rights to the 12 notes of the fret board….or can they? We’ll be following this story closely.
On a side note, the guys at NextLevelGuitar.com recently released a vBook which contains over 100 video lessons, taught by David Taub, that walk you step-by-step from beginning to advanced levels of guitar playing. If you’ve watched David’s lessons on YouTube before, you know what an excellent instructor he is, so this should be good. Click here to find out more.
