Video Guitar Lesson: Jimi Hendrix Chord
Aug 3rd, 2007 by Guitar MX Admin
Last month, we told you about David Taub of NextLevelGuitar.com, who was forced to remove his video guitar lessons from YouTube because of a copyright dispute. We then told you that David would soon be back and teaching songs on YouTube, with some slight variations in his lessons. Well, David Taub is back, and posting lessons on YouTube under the name rockongoodpeople. The new lessons won’t teach you how to play songs note-for-note like before, but will show you how to play in the styles of various artists.
In this video guitar lesson, David talks about a chord known as the Jimi Hendrix chord, which is an augmented 9th chord known as the 7#9. This chord was made famous by Hendrix, who used it in the songs ‘Purple Haze’ and ‘Foxy Lady’. This chord was also used a lot by Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Here is a diagram of E7#9:

As David mentions in the video, his guitar is tuned down half a step to Eb. For more information on tuning down half a step, and other alternative tunings, check out our Alternative Tuning lesson. You may also find our lessons on Chord Construction and Chord Progressions helpful.
